Are you Joking here?*

February 2, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Paul Shane, in character as Ted Bovis, should be the next Newcastle manager. Investing all the logic and footballing acumen that the Newcastle board put into the choice of Joe Kinnear would make this the logical step. Decked ouy in his tartan suit with his hair slicked back trying to run some scam behind Joe Maplin/Mike Ashley’s back with assistant Spike left in a series of embarassing muddles. “Ted we cant sell the player’s lunches to the people in the nearby office on the day Joe Maplin is due to come down to the training ground”. ” [Cigarette in mouth] Oh stop being such a big nelly Spike, its an extra five pound in both our pockets is this.”

Even if its not Maplin’s finest funnyman, there needs to be a replacement. It needn’t necessarily be a fictional comedian from a 1950s holiday camp. But are you sure Kinnear is former manager of Wimbledon (who?) and Forest? What if I told you that was part of an Internet prank and Kinnear was actually a character from Only Fools and Horses…and that he appeared as a bit part character in 3 episodes beforee starring in one where he set up a business with Micky Pearce which conned Del Boy out of 500 nicker he had earmarked for a cot for Damien. Of course Del Boy had the last laugh and thanks to Trigger and an unwilling Boycey the Kinnear character ended was last seen leaving Peckham cap in hand.

That was until John Sullivan thought there was more to the Kinnear character than he had got out of the limited appearances on Britain’s favourite sitcom. He set about writing a spin off where Kinnear managed a pub that attracted the ‘wrong sort of client’. However while working at an improv night the actor who plays Kinnear was in character and was inadvertently appointed manager of Wimbledon. No-one takes responsibility for the mistake to this day, though a club historian claims it was part of an ongoing good humoured battle of jokes between Dean Holdsworth and Robbie Earle.

The revelation that Kinnnear is just a bad actor locked in some terminal improv clears up any lingering doubt that he was not capable of managing a top flight side.

*It sounds like Joe Kinnear, see what I did here?
